HK45 COMPACT TACTICAL Review

Overview

Here's my newly acquired HK 45 Compact Tactical. It's the V1 version with normal DA/SA with decocker and safety. It comes equipped with (2) 10rd "elephant foot magazines. I also purchased one of the 8rd standard magazines to carry along with the thread protector that is not included with the gun.

I've owned the full-size HK 45 for a little over a year and am very pleased with it. It's but a little too large to carrying. It's the HK 45 CT is very similar to that of the Glock 19. The mags with elephant feet aren't the most compact, but they are comfortable shooting. Recoil is very good considering it's size. I've owned several smaller 45's available on the market. Recently, I tried this XDM 45 Compact. Although the gun was very weighty, its recoil seemed more powerful than I believed it could have been. It's the HK 45 CT is very comfortable to shoot - only slightly greater than the full-size version.

The thread protector tends to break, so I put an O-ring included with the gun, just near the threads. This way, when the protector's threads hit it, it locks itself into the right position. It's my understanding that you're supposed to take off the thread protector prior to shooting, but this worked for me.

Accuracy has been excellent. I've put over 300 rounds in it, but it was correct and had extremely tight groups straight from the box. Much better than the one I shot in the larger version at first when I received it. My experience shooting the larger version may have contributed to shooting the compact perfectly. The balance of the 8th magazine and the barrel with threads is perfect.

The gun comes come with Meprolight night sights that are good. They're similar in form and appearance to regular 'luminova' sight. I'm guessing this is the reason they're the factory default night sights. The majority of my HK pistols are retrofitted using Trijicon HD yellows and I am very pleased with these sights. I'm not certain if I'll invest the money to get these sights replaced or not. Although they're "ok," I shoot very well.

To use a holster, I purchased this BladeTech Nano. This is my first Blade-Tech holster , and I'm satisfied to date. My preferred holster for all of my guns is the Compt-Tac Infidel. I like the fact that the Nano makes use of very thin Kydex. It also gives a pleasant secure click when you insert it into the holster. The Infidel that I use for my full-size HK 45 doesn't have as an enticing lock in , despite the fact that many of the other models have. I blame this on the shape of the scalloped that is present in the HK trigger guard, making it harder to achieve the same positive indentation as other guns can achieve.

A lot of people complain about the grip style P2000. They claim it's too slippery. I understand the argument. It's pretty slick however, I really enjoy that aspect of the gun. Because it's very comfortable to shoot it doesn't feel as if it's going to fall from my hands or anything, and it feels very comfortable against my skin. It's not going to have that identical hand-molded feel as the larger HK 45 or P30, however, it's small and comfy.

Overall, I think that the HK 45 Compact Tactical is will soon be one of my top carry guns. I've been on the at the dry fire, trying to get the trigger set up. There are some who complain about HK triggers and I'd tend to support them about out of the box triggers. A well-broken in HK trigger is great to me. I have an extra Wolff lower power hammer spring I might put in to lighten it a small amount. In the meantime it's great.
