Overview:
If you're not able to determine that the HK45c was an upgraded model of the USP 45 Compact; this has piqued my interest due to my obsession with the Heckler and Koch USP Compact in 9mm. The HK45c has a few cool updates, like the longer magazine release as well as a 1913 accessory rail however, the design on the side panels isn't quite as impressive than the one on USP's. However, it's less expensive than a USP 45 Compact.
If you're curious regarding the head image of the cover, that's actually a joke within the Heckler & Koch community. In 2004, Heckler & Koch had a catalog at their SHOT Show stand where the magazine's cover was loaded in reverse. If you're looking to find out more about this and more, you can get more details on the Firearm Blog.
The review was posted on my previous website on the 18th of July 2018. Due to this, this review won't be the same format as the other reviews of firearms can be found on Just Pews.
Pistol Overview
Once you have opened the box that your Heckler & Koch gun HK45c arrives inside, you'll receive a lock with a brand name as well as the gun is itself with two magazines, a adjustable back-strap that can be changed, as well as the standard documentation. There are also additional O-Rings to the barrel in the event that you lose one, as well as two Heckler & Koch labels
General Specifications:
- Frame Material Frame Material: Polymer
- Caliber: .45ACP
- Flush Capacity 8
- Barrel Length: 3.94''
- Total Length 7.24 inches
- The height is 5.51 inches
- Width 1.54 inches
- The weight is 28.48 ounces
The barrel of the HK45c features Heckler and Koch's famous polygonal rifling and faux phosphorescent night sights and a retracted recoil assembly, which includes a steel guide rod (yes it's using the same recoil system as USP45 Compact). USP45 Compact). Before this HK45 Compact the unique thing that HK's had included the recoil buffer that was mounted onto the recoil assembly. This was the reason for the HK45c which has added an O-Ring on the top of the barrel. Heckler and Koch's claims are that it will tighten the locking mechanism between the barrel and slide, while increasing the accuracy. I'm not sure if I've tested to determine if the claim is real.
JP HK45c Sights
Charge: 5 seconds using flashlight on your smartphone
Before we get started, let's look at the sights that phosphorescent on this pistol. Many people look at these sights thinking that they're making night sights usable, but however, this isn't true (hence my naming them "faux night sights" in the above paragraph). These are typical 3-dot designs that have some form of phosphorescent paint instead of normal white paint.
They do shine quite bright after a short charge time, but they should not be used in lieu of night lights if those are your preferred. In this image, you can be able to see how bright they can be, the first is taken during a summer day that is overcast The second is in a room that is pitch black.
If you're thinking of this as a pure firearm for range, there's no issue here however if you're looking to defend yourself, I'd recommend swapping the sights for something else.
As a compact gun pistol, the HK45c is quite massive. I'd love to claim it's due to the caliber but I'm not sure. It's the USP 45 Compact is smaller in dimension (with the same capacity of flush fit) as well as that of the Glock 30S is smaller; with a larger capacity. When I purchased this HK45 Compact I had the intention of using the gun as a carrying weapon in the summer, but I've never bought any more magazines to use it...or even the gun holster. However, there was an issue that I came across using the gun. More on this in the future.
Inside, you'll notice (above) the fact that this pistol has lots of similarities with the USP series of pistols. It's equipped with the same recoil mechanism, the identical Hammer (from appearances) and detent plates, the identical magazines, magazine releases and many more. The pistol also has similar sight cutsouts, as the P30 and VP9. If you're stocking up on pistols from Heckler and Koch, you'll appreciate the similarities.
JP HK45c The Featured
When it comes to shoot-ability shooting-ability is concerned, it's a great gun to shoot. HK45c is both enjoyable and terrifying simultaneously. The muzzle elevation isn't as large as you might think considering its size and caliber, but the recoil is powerful enough to slam the gun's grip into your hand. In terms of the trigger is concerned I went with the standard V1 trigger which is a conventional trigger that has an automatic safety and decocker. The double action trigger isn't as straightforward pulling as the USP's. However, the pull that is single action and the reset feature, are identical.
Ergonomically, there's places where you'll feel the benefits in comparison with those in the USP Compact and areas where you'll be thinking, "What the hell were they thinking? !"
The texturing is certainly one of those "What did they really thinking? !" areas. Texturing on the sides is smooth as it gets and provides the most traction during shooting, while the straps at the front and back give great traction. this texturing could work well with the sides from the USP.
For ergonomics , I must declare it's a heavy gun that does not feel as comfortable as the USP Compact. Texturing of the straps on both front as well as the rear strap can be rough for the human body (if you are in a holster). The texturing is lacking in the area of grippyness. The larger paddle release is a welcome improvement but the fact that the safety is larger than that of it USP Compact is a bit of a disadvantage. With bigger hands, you could feel your thumb rubbing it accidentally, but it won't trigger the safety to be engaged and activate. Of course, this shouldn't be a problem with the LEM models.
What the HK45c is superior to what it has over the USP Compact is the fact that it's ambidextrous...well nearly. The slide release has been made fully ambidextrous, and it's fairly simple to use even having less surface area as compared to the USP's. Magazine release no matter how the biggest improvement it is, nips my middle finger every time I attempt to lower the magazine. This means I must alter my grip to release the magazine.
Heckler & Koch did keep the lever for safety/decocker from the USP series, and because of this, it's either right handed or left handed and is not designed to work to both simultaneously.
The last improvement is the introduction of front serrations for more convenient pressing tests. They could be placed along all the way down the slide, providing the traction needed to cover a larger of the slide, but they're not as smooth as the rear ones they feel exactly like the serrations on the slide of the USP.
JP HK45c LIGHT Compatibility
Ready to kill the Heckler and Koch HK45c that I wrote about in my book and likely in yours? It's that 1913 rail. I'm astonished that this even is an issue in my review , considering Larry Vickers and Ken Hackathorn contributed to the design of this gun (or at the very least, the full-size variant). The 1913 rail of this pistol is not compatible with any of the Streamlight TLR-1 or the Surefire x300 without making modifications to the light.
It's also not compatible with it with the Olight PL-Mini or the Streamlight TLR-7 that fits close to every gun that is available, as well as that of the Walther CCP which is substantially smaller.
The reason it isn't able to accommodate these lights is due to the rail was placed further away. In the event that Heckler & Koch would move the rail to the dead space the front of the rail or below the muzzle, the HK45c will definitely work with the TLR-7 and most likely the TLR-1.
In conclusion
After looking at photos taken of pictures of the Heckler & Koch H&K HK45c I fell in love with the Heckler & Koch HK45c with it. It's a beautiful firearm. The moment I bought it from a local dealer, I definitely experienced an honeymoon, but it abruptly ended when I was able to shoot it after I attempted to connect any of those lights to it.
The slick side panels the inability to accept typical weapon lights, and the possible accuracy loss due to the loss of a rubber O-Ring caused me to lose my love for this gun. However, on the plus side it came with the upgrade of $15 that I thought was required to the USP and the longer magazine release, which caused me to pinch my finger.
Therefore, if you're not an advocate of mounted weapon lights, but you enjoy the way they feel inside your hands If you like the way it feels you should buy it. If you're a fan of having the capability to mount lights for weapons and the capability to shoot using sweaty hands, do not.
