Gun HK Vp40
For 2014, Guns & Ammo named the H&K VP9 top of the line with a bullet as the Handgun of the Year. This is a good thing. It is the German manufacturer's first handgun that is fired by striker (since the pistols P7 of early 1980's) is tough and reliable, precise and as comfortable as a thin top on a cold winter day. The VP9 is still my preferred handgun. When I was informed that H&K is introducing an .40 caliber version I was open to the suggestions. Who wouldn't like a little more sexiness for their self-defense firearm? I bought an VP40 to test my first gun for TTAG, and it was ready.
The VP40 and the VP9 have the same features and ergonomics. Much like its sibling the VP40 comes with three backstraps that can be interchanged and six side-panels. The process of determining the best combination of the backstrap and side-panels to fit your hand's size and shape can take some time but the final result will add its shooting ease and ballistic precision. For shooters with small hands like the reviewer in this article is the distinction between chaos and control.\
There are two models: the VP9 and VP40 also have the same dimensions. The two guns are not exactly the same; the VP40 is millimeters taller than the 9mm guns. However, the majority of present VP9 Holsters cannot accommodate the slightly bigger VP40. [Edit: CompTac has just released an holster specifically designed for firearms.[] Fortunately that these VP series pistols utilize HK P30 magazines with their respective calibers. The VP40 can be fitted with the 13- or 10-round P30 magazines. However, H&K mag prices have been rising since the VP9 was introduced to the market. They're also hard to come by. Since the gun's new introduction it's likely to become worse before it becomes better.
The VP40 is an adjustable pistol. The slide stop on the left of the shooter's side is smaller, however both are accessible. The magazine release takes on the shape of a set of paddles situated in the back of the trigger guard. The two VP series pistols come with charging support on the slide's rear. I found them very useful but I prefer the pinch method that uses the forefinger and thumb to charge the slide from the rear. Shooters who prefer a "combat rack" can take off the charging support with only a couple of steps.
The VP40 we tested was equipped with Tritium TRU DOT night vision which are part of the $100 law security upgrade package. The lights are brighter than those of a Jeopardy winner with Red Bull. It is also a plus that the larger rear sight's leading edge lets you use a single hand for slide rack. The VP40 comes with a Picatinny MILSTD-1913 Picatinn rail that's molded into the frame for lighting and other items, and is weight-limited to 5.6 pounds. I tried a four-ounce SureFire light for the weapon without any problems.
The VP40 weighs 28.93 pounds, which is more than it's VP9 with 2.37 ounces. The weight difference is evident immediately you get the VP40. Do the additional weight and the top ergos solve this .40 S&W round's notorious "snappiness"? Good question. The VP40 is targeted at the market of law enforcement and the market in which .40 S&W still holds sway. We need our law enforcement personnel who comprise a growing number of females - to possess as high of accuracy as they can. I headed out to the range, loaded my VP40 and Federal's American-Eagle Pistol .40 S&W 180 Grain FMJFP pills to test it.
But not before verifying the reports that H&K mags have sharp feed lips that can be rough on girls' (or male's ) fingers. The included HK speed loader is more challenging to use than my second-hand speedloader. But it was it was a benefit nonetheless. When firing the gun, the trigger on the VP40 is a remarkably small take-up, as well as an 5.4 pounds. trigger pull. The trigger pull is smooth and constant throughout the movement. The trigger snaps quickly and is followed by a quick fast reset.
H&K claims that the VP40's unique flat recoil spring that is captive reduces recoil. When compared to other .40's that I've tried and haven't noticed a distinction. It's still a fast round. The firing and getting back on target was a lot of work, but not as much as the flowing, natural rhythm that is provided with the VP9. I hit 1.5"-2"-sized groups using my VP40 in 15-yard range. I fired slowly with five round shots. After letting free, the groups grew by 3"-4". In comparison to shooting 1 group of '' repid-fire'' with my VP9, I was able to shoot groups at 15 feet.
It is clear that the way I fire the VP9 more accurately than my VP40. But, just like every .40-caliber handgun and the VP40 demands an additional level of concentration on posture, grip breathing, trigger press , and plenty of practice to reach confidence-building accuracy. Attention should be cultivated and reinforced during training but is usually not. There's a reason that police departments are shifting to 9mm. Sometimes, it's because of costs as .40 S&W remains a relatively expensive round. Other times, it's due to being the reality that .40 isn't an easy cartridge to master.
The U.S. military adopting hollow-point 9mm cartridges for firearms .40 S&W may be losing its masculine appeal. Although a good gun the VP40 is, I don't think the VP40 will go on the shelves as the VP9 was in 2014. However, if you're considering buying the .40-caliber self-defense weapon The VP40's proven durability along with its "hostile atmosphere" finish ensures you'll have an gun that can stand up to the round's and your own. Personally, I'm sticking with the VP9 for the time being, at least until H&K launches the VP45.

(out of five stars):
Style *
The VP40 is a solid and strong style, reminiscent of the look of an MMA fighter wearing business attire.
Accuracy
The VP40 is a very precise firearm that has a sharp caliber that needs skills to master.
Ergonomics * * * *
Much more comfortable than an old leather jacket, after you have sorted out the side panels and backstop. The trigger is clear and sharp and a pleasure to pull.
Reliability * * *
HK has put the VP40 to tests of torture unlike anything else (hopefully) that the gun could perform in a practical setting. The VP40 is based on proven and reliable platforms that will last for many years to come and is covered under Heckler & Koch's lifetime limited warranty.
Personalization
The shooter has the ability to alter the grip's position to adapt it into any type of configuration and the rail for picatinny permits all kinds of attachments. While there is no doubt that the VP40 is the latest model Many of the enhancements to the VP9 platform are compatible to the VP40. Star was omitted due to the current shortage of the holster option.
Overall * *
A top-quality, ergonomic firearm that is priced at a fair selling cost. It almost completely eliminates the .40-caliber snappy problem, but it's not exactly. Can any handgun be considered a safe choice?
