Overview
The MP5 is perhaps the most desirable 9mm SMG ever created. It has been copied by many, but collectors and enthusiasts always desire to have that German rolling-delayed blowback to perfection. While H&K has brought in SP5 and SP5, they have decided to import the SP5K and SP5 but they've made the decision to import into America US SP5L, the HK SP5L, the modern-day HK94.
You may be thinking to yourself "Why make a long-barreled SP5?". There are several reasons. Let's look back in time to when H&K brought in the HK94.
The MP5 is usually an 8.9 barreled SMG. Legally it is difficult to find and more costly. In addition, pistol-style versions of semi-auto MP5 weren't viable in the 80s. H&K manufactured and then imported the HK94. The HK94 was an extended-barreled, semi-auto MP5. It had an 16.54 barrel that was a '' and was available in a range of variations including Fixed stock with collapsible, and the HK94/SG1 variant that was a sniper/target. Like you see in the image above, some had an air-ventilated barrel shroud as well as an angled foregrip.
It is because of the brace for stabilization that has made the pistol version of the MP5 (the SP5 and SP5K) more practical. Then why do we need an updated HK94 and create an HK SP5L? Competition and restrictions from the state.
Certain states, like California or New York have terrible gun laws. For example, the HK SP5L is imported into the US as a pistol , and therefore is not legally required to be 922R compliant. Although this is excellent for H&K however, it doesn't directly affect the user. It is crucial to know that some states have restrictions on your right to own an SP5K , or SP5. The SP5L is able to be converted into a rifle , and is conform to the laws of any state. Simply add a stock, and any other modifications that are compliant like a fin-grip and fixed magazines. Yes, you should likely swap parts with American-made parts to meet your requirements for the ATF as well as the 922R.
Another possibility with the pistol is using it in a contest such as USPSA. The governing board of USPSA doesn't allow the use of firearms equipped that have arm braces to compete. It is necessary to file to get a tax-free stamp, and SBR'd the pistol before you are allowed to compete with it. Local events and running the fun run with the braced pistol is an entirely different thing entirely. If you're looking to compete in an official manner and have your scores tallied and tallied, you'll need an AR. The SP5L lets you participate in the PCC division of the USPSA.
SP5L, SP5 and SP5K PDW
As we mentioned The SP5L is available as gun. However, you can alter it as you best, so long as it's lawful in the jurisdiction you are in. The first step I took was to add an optic mount and a stock to allow me to use an red dot. I have a tri-lug flash hider I added on the end of the barrel. But, as it's an extremely long barrel, I was looking for an option to cover it. My friend Kevin constructed the HK34 in his own name. I would have liked H&K would have gone this route to build the SP5L.
I was hoping to design the SP5L exactly like this. But, it's not possible as the HK34 comes with an extended tubing for cocking which allows it to be fitted with handguards made of HK91/G3. I wasn't discouraged though. The SP5L from HK is an MP5/SP5 in essence and any accessories designed specifically for them will function. I thought of this solution. I took an 9'' HK416 quad rail that I had lying around , and attached it on the KAC MP5 guard.
It's not an "real" solution though. The handguard on the HK416 is fixed by the friction of the rail covers. Then I put the front sight of 416 and positioned it directly before the front view of SP5L. I employed a zip tie keep them in place. This way, the handguard will not fall off when I grabbed the SP5L using the handguard extension. I'm hoping that someone comes up with an extension that is better for the handguard that works with the SP5L.
Are you not a fan of the handguard with the extended length? A nice-looking barrel shroud as well as certain accessories could make the SP5L extremely attractive. This is the barrel shroud I had from the CZ Scorpion Carbine.
I was looking to duplicate the MP5-SD look, so a close friend provided me with the SD Rubber handguard. These handguards fit over the cage fixed to the receiver of the MP5. I have found it to fit perfectly over an Midwest Industries M-LOK handguard for the MP5.
What happens if you are in an area that is a bit restrictive? Certain states allow the possession of "Other Firearms". It's simple to change the SP5L to an actual firearm instead of being a rifle. Simply add a brace and vertical foregrip. I used the Wilcox PEQ-7 but you are able to make use of any vertical foregrip of your choice.
How Does The HK SP5L Shoot?
The SP5L has been designed as an SP5 with a barrel that is long, there are some aspects I was interested in. What is the sound level of SP5L as compared to mine SP5 as well as what's the speed of the bullets that shoot out of the SP5L? SP5L against the SP5?
Because the SP5L is a very long barrel, it will not require much to make it sound. I shot my Tirant 9M however instead of making use of the entire suppressor, I used only the short configuration. With 165gr subsonic round it's extremely enjoyable to shoot. I must use an entire length Tirant 9M with my SP5 to achieve similar outcomes. But, I believe that the HK SP5L is more quiet because the muzzle is farther away from my ear.
I employed the FX Airguns pocket chronograph. It only measures velocity lower than 1200 FPS. I chose to go with subsonic ammunition. If there is an increase in speed due to SP5L's longer SP5L barrel, it will be evident.
As per the chronograph there's no difference between SP5 or SP5L.
Comparing to an unrestricted SP5K however? It's an average of 40 fps reduction in velocity.
Final Thoughts On The SP5L

I carried the SP5L to the local USPSA competition. The handguard was extended, making the SP5L more easy to grab and hold the barrel. The barrel's length isn't optimal, but I can see it helping those who suffer oppression get their hands on the roller lock delights. It's the HK SP5L retails for about $2900. I saw one in my local gun shop for $2700. With a few accessories you can make it look more attractive and at its core it's still an MP5 with a semi-auto function which you are legally able to possess. Isn't that worth owning? I would like to see more companies come up with products for SP5L. For more information regarding the HK SP5L, visit the website of HK.
