This HK P30 Review covers all the information positive and negative.
HK released the P30 series of pistols in 2006. Prior to that, HK had made both the Mark 23 and the HK USP series, which were both frames fired by hammer. It was the HK P30 was a modernization of the HK USP series.
It's likely that you've heard of that the HK P30 for its very comfortable grip.
HK was certainly in the forefront of technology when it came to grips for the HK P30 and it's still more flexible than any other grip for handguns that exists.
Role Based on Size
HK is well-known for its reliability and high-quality firearms. The HK P30 is no exception to this standard.
The HK P30 is a fairly massive gun.
Its size is comparable to it's size is similar to a Glock 17 in grip length. This means that it is unlikely that you will be carrying it in your pocket or around your ankle.
It's still concealed enough to fit inside the waistband, if you want to.
It can be used as as a gun for duty as it is serve as a concealed carry gun.
Features
The HK P30 comes with a 15-round flush-fit mag. In the past the 15-round magazine was the only choice, but in recent years, beginning 2020 this HK P30 will take 17-round magazines which HK redesigns to fit 2020's HK VP9 2020.
They're still flush-fit and they do not add any length to the firearm.
Taylor Freelance and a couple of other companies develop magazines that are extensions to some of the HK P30/VP9 Series.
There are also aftermarket magazines from the company known as X-Tech that came with 21,21 rounds longer magazines.
HK hasn't got a large range of aftermarket magazines like many other firearms.
There's plenty to satisfy your requirements.
Magwell
- Magwells on HK P30 is very lacking.
There are two sections which are cut off over the magazine's base plate, allowing the magazine to be ripped off in the event that you were to have a problem.
It's unlikely that you'll experience malfunctions with this gun in the event of shooting poor ammunition.
It's great to have this feature but at the exact it eliminates the column to the right side of the grip, which could allow for faster reloads.
I'd prefer an increased magwell size on the gun, and an option that permits you to strip magazines easily or even a rare malfunction.
Grip/Ergonomics
The grip of the HK P30 is truly incredible.
The gun is loaded with lots of characteristics that is the only firearm in the market, other than that of the HK VP9 which followed the HK P30 by a couple of years. It is the only firearm that HK P30 has removable back straps, which when it was launched was a totally new concept.
Today, back straps with removable buckles are very common, but at the time , they weren't.
Another distinctive aspect of the gun in use to present is the ability to take off the side panels.
The side panels by taking off the backstrap, and then replacing them with side panel.
This provides you with a lot of possibilities to make the grip work for your hand. It helps make this HK P30 truly one of the most ergonomic firearms that are in the market. The grip model is based the Olympic grips for pistols with targets.
This had to be reduced in size to make it easier to carry.
HK P30 Grip
The ergonomics are amazing. It's hard to say enough about how well this gun will fit into the palm of your hand.
My only complaint is the finger grooves that are on one side of the gun.
They are perfect for me and my typical size hands, but when someone has very tiny or huge hands, I can think of ways they could cause problems.
Grip Tang
The tang of the grip, or beavertail, as some prefer to refer to it is well-rounded.
The gun does feature an axis with a high bore however, this gun has also a well-rounded tang which lets the hand fit that grip area. It is highly flexible. It also means that you can reach as high as the gun allows you without feeling uncomfortable within the grip's web.
Texturing
The texturing using the HK P30 is absolutely fantastic.
It's not similar to an CZ P-10 with super aggressive on the straps on the front and the back strap. It's more like the texture of like a Sig P365, however it's superior.
The texturing extends over the grip in 360 degrees, and it is akin to Sandpaper. It's not a super-aggressive sandpaper. It's a gentle fine grit sandpaper.
Perhaps within the 800-1200 range of grit.
If you touch this grip and feel the texture, you will be able to tell the quality the polymer used in this HK P30 series really is.
HK P30 front strap
The texturing is definitely one of the most beautiful texture on a firearm that is stock. I'm a huge admirer of the texture of CZ P-10C. CZ P-10 C which uses an alternative method for getting the amazing texturing. However, the HK P30 could be more appealing.
It's one of the matters I'm not sure what I think, however it's the HK P30 is the one gun that could make me think it has a more pleasing feel as compared to other models in the CZ P-10 series.
General Feeling
The HK P30 is arguably the most premium frame pistol made of polymer on the market. It's far superior to other pistols out available. The polymer has an incredibly better quality than , say, it's HK VP9 series.
It certainly feels better than something similar to an Glock Smith and Wesson XD CZ P-10C, or any other polymer striker handguns that are available.
The gun itself isn't fancy , however it's well above any other gun you can find on the market today.
In terms of the quality.
Slide
The slide for the HK P30 series again was way ahead of its time.
Forward cocking serrations, which were not common at the time it was first introduced.
They're not so aggressive as I'd prefer. I'll admit that it's because the HK slide finish isn't as smooth as other finishes. It has some texture it than that of the HK VP9 series which is extremely smooth.
It is more premium over it does the HK VP9 but the serrations themselves leave a less to be left to be.
They'll work. If you've got damp hands, they'll work , but they're lacking some of the bite that I'd like to observe.
HK P30: Sights and Review
The sightings of The HK P30 are going to be an issue.
They are available with three-dot luminescent lights and you can order them directly from the manufacturer with night sights that are three dots. Both sights are mediocre and have the same sight image.
It's outdated , and honestly, they appear like they're from 2006.
Today, we have many better options for sights available and guns such as the Glock come from the factory equipped with Ameriglo high-contrast sights, as well as guns such as that of the Springfield Hellcat that also come with a fantastic made-to-order.
The Canik TP9 SF Elite comes with a fantastic set of fiber optics.
HK P30 Rear Sight
Given the cost of this gun, it's disappointed to learn that it's not equipped with the best set of sights.
The good news is that there are plenty of after-market options that fit this type of gun. 10-8 includes Night sights to match those who own the HK P30, as well as Trijicon and Vickers Tactical. HK P30 utilizes the same sights cut that is used in that of the HK VP9 along with the HK 45C. There's several options.
However, you might not get your ideal set of sights since there aren't many aftermarket makers that offer support for HK handguns.
Red Dot Options
There are currently no Red Dot cuts from the factory for the HK P30 series. It's not clear when we'll be seeing it in the US market any time very soon.
There are several firms that can custom mill the mount, but it will not be inexpensive.
The HK is equipped with an adjustable slide which tapers down and features decent drafting on each side of the slide.
You'll most likely need an adapter plate made to fit the gun or an red dot, such as the Holosun 407K or a 507K, which is much slimmer and has a with a more rounded profile.
Improve Your Shooting with Mini Red Dots
Shop at Primary Arms
Because of this, the adapter plate usually is more expensive than other adapters. The price could range from $300-$400 to include a red dot on the HK P30.
Controls
The HK P30 is a very complicated firearm with regards to the controls. The reason why I say this is because that there are a variety of variations.
They all come with diverse options like the safety feature that allows the user to keep their gun cocked but locked.
Also, a decocker activated by thumb that can also function as a safety.
A decocker is located on the back of the gun Then it's the HK LEM, which is my model, in which there are no safety devices externally on the firearm.
Differential HK P30 Review
HK P30 V1
This is the version I own. It's the lightweight LEM trigger, but it doesn't have security or decocking features. You'll experience an even trigger pull every time you use the P30 V1 HK trigger.
P30 V3
This is the HK's DA/SA version. It comes with a decocker located on the slide's rear.
It's easy to reach using your supporting hand, which is why it's not the most ideal layout for use with one hand. It's still attractive and has a low profile.
Other Variants
The Hong Kong P30 V1 and V3 are the only models in production available that are available on the US Market at this time. There are other versions that have safety levers as well as safety levers that function as decockers.
I hope that HK will provide more options. It is possible to get one from the market for used.
Mag Release
This HK P30 magazine release is truly amazing.
HK is well-known for its magazine releases with paddles and this isn't an exception. This magazine release for the HK P30 is fully ambidextrous and, as a shooter who is right-handed I can find three different ways that I can easily open the magazine.
One of them is employing my trigger fingers, one utilizes my first hand's middle finger. And the third utilizes my first thumb to lower the magazine.
All of them require me to break the grip of the gun, but I do not consider this to be an problem.
Many will claim it is because it is because the HK P30 style magazine release isn't as quick as button releases, however I believe that this is not the case.
The majority of the time spent in a reload is likely to be bringing your new magazine in the gun and not removing the empty magazine.
This is why due to this, the HK P30 is a really great system and you do not have to be worried about the release of your magazine being accidentally pressed, thereby removing your magazine.
Stop slide
HK P30 Slide Stopped Locked Left
Slide stop and slide release that comes with the HK P30 is excellent as well.
It's fully ambidextrous and has mirrored sides and sits in a position that is far enough back so that it is easy to reach it using your thumb, even if you have tiny hands.
This gun is perfect in how the ergonomics and design all work together. It's also extremely large. It has a large ledge.
So , if you're one of those who prefers to use your thumb support to release the slide when loading, your thumb for support can effortlessly fit onto a large portion of the ledge that is on the slide release making reloads into the gun an easy process.
HK P30 Slide Stop Locked Left
HK has done an amazing job on the slide stop that HK created. However, we'll advise you to stay away from the P30 if you are a big person and you'd prefer to use with a good grip this HK P30 may cause issues by accidentally locking back the slide, or sliding not locking because of the position of this stopper slide.
However I don't believe that this will cause any problems for the majority of shooters, however it might be a problem for a few.
Trigger
There is many trigger options available for this HK P30 series as I have mentioned within the security section. They can be broken into two types. You have your double-action/single-action trigger that can be carried in the double action, or you can carry it cocked and locked making the trigger almost like a single action only operation.
Then there's LEM series from HK. HK LEM series.
The HK LEM series has two different weights. I'm using the lighter weight trigger on the trigger of my HK P30 LEM. We'll begin by talking of this series of triggers. HK LEM series.
The trigger of the HK LEM series features a variety of very-similar take-up. After you've gone through the is taken up, you'll see that the hammer is positioned towards back of the gun and then gently presses back.
Safety Factor
This means that when you reholster the firearm that you have in it's HK P30 holster, you can rest your thumb against the slide's back that is this HK P30.
It will stop the hammer from turning back.
This is a great feature to keep in mind that you could be involved in a battle at the foot. In case someone wants to shoot you with their gun or theirs.
Put your hands onto the slide's back and this will stop the hammer from returning.
Stopping the firearm from firing when it is pulled.
There is a take-up during the first pull of the HK P30. The trigger pull has a little take-up, and it goes towards the rear, until you hit on a wall.
From there you're on an ongoing break.
It is said that the HK P30 trigger resets slightly ahead from the wall.
Reset point about halfway between the beginning on the pull trigger, and where you get to the wall. This means you'll have some taking up space before you get to the wall once more and can enjoy an excellent roll-over break.
This is a precocked or a partially-cocked one.
The way that it works, the way HK P30 LEM works, is that it cocks the hammer for the most part. When pulling the trigger , the section after the wall will cock the hammer fully.
The Hong Kong P30 LEM trigger is very similar to a striker-fired one in that regard, however it's totally different. It's different from any trigger I've ever felt before.
Good The Bad The Ugly Hong P30 Review
Personally, I am a fan however, I could see it taking some time to get used to. There are other options that are part of the HK series include double action and single action options.
The double-action triggers of the HK P30 are very heavy and springy, but not incredibly smooth.
HK isn't famous for having extremely smooth triggers however they're known for having extremely robust trigger systems. The single action is comparable to the double-action but isn't a fantastic single-action trigger.
It is believed that the HK LEM is thought by many to be among the most effective triggers for the HK P30.
If you're searching for an extremely smooth trigger and an action firearm that is double-action and single-action then you'll likely need to consider something similar to a SIG P-226 and the CZ 75 trigger.
Aftermarket
As I mentioned earlier, there's not an abundance of options in the aftermarket available for HK P30. The aspect is that it is the HK P30 uses VP9 magazines and sights opens up possibilities for these components.
However, outside from that likely to come across a large selection of accessories.
There's plenty of holsters that you can find an appropriate holster and cool accessories such as weights that are placed at the bottom of the firearm , and compensators. Once you've gotten over that, there isn't much to look for.
There's good news that this HK P30 doesn't need it.
The gun is well put together right straight out of the box with the only exception of the sights.
Maintenance
HK P30 Disassembled
In the maintenance department, this HK P30 is a little different than other handguns. This handgun HK P30 takes down using an unusual technique.
You must close the magazine at a certain level then you'll be required to release the stopper on the slide.
HK P30 Disassembly
It's a bit confusing, but take a look at this image how the system functions. You'll require either a pin or a punch in order to force the lock slide to a sufficient distance. Once you're familiar with the system, it's an excellent system. I love how it functions.
It's not a rigid, hard technology component. It's just different from the one you're accustomed to, especially if familiar with something that's more similar to an Glock or an SIG.
HK P30 Slide is Partially Off
Aesthetics HK P30 Review
In terms of aesthetics, visually, the HK P30 is an absolutely stunning firearm for a frame made of polymer.
It's got just the right amount of details on the grip. It's also complemented by the serrations in the front and back and the details on the slide. It does not look cluttered, but it is stylish. It's difficult to find a similar model of this gun.
HK P30 Right
A majority of guns tend to go overboard with the craziness and marks on the slide, or totally underwhelm you as many of Glock models.
The HK P30 finds you just the perfect balance. My opinion is that it's a very visually pleasing and well-balanced firearm.
HK P30 Shooting Review
If you've read the reviews until now you're likely to think this will be one of the top guns on the market with regards to the ergonomics and other features. The shooting experience with this HK P30 was a disappointment for me.
This trigger needs many times to get familiar with. The trigger is able to be used smoothly once you've mastered it. It's slow than many of the regular striker fire triggers.
It's only a little more effort to make the right shot with this gun. Particularly at high speeds.
Recoil
Reflex of the HK P30 is typical for the size of the gun, however it is a more disappointing. This gun is sturdy handgun, but it's not always smooth.
The gun isn't refined in its execution.
There is a fair number of flips of the muzzle because of an axis of high bore as well as the heavy slide.
This gun is somewhat disappointed from a shooter's point of view. It's a gun that I'd like to have and would love to own, but I cannot think of buying this gun as I do not shoot it and other options.
However, it's likely one of the most secure firearms because of it's LEM trigger.
The LEM trigger is a great option to those who don't feel at ease using a trigger with a striker. However, they don't have the ability to operate with a single-action, double-action trigger properly.
The trigger is somewhere in between both in terms of user-friendliness.
Personally, I'm looking forward to spending of time using this firearm to see if I could shoot it better. I'd like to carry it because of my personal love for this firearm, however from a practical perspective it's difficult to justify having this gun over other alternatives that I can shoot better.
