Glock 26 Gen 5 9x19mm Review

Overview Glock 26 Gen 5

I'm going for the front before I begin my overview of Glock 26 Gen 5. For a long time, I had it was the Model 26, Glock's tiniest double-stack 9mm was not my favorite Glock.

When I first began working in gun shops and gun shops, the smallest Glock 9 mm was the 19, but gun-shop stories influenced me and magazine ads to believe it was fairly new.40 S&W caliber was the equivalent to Thor's hammer, and consequently, I was carrying the 19's .40-caliber counterpart and that of the Glock 23

I took a few years off from selling guns during the late 90s, and this time was also the emergence of the Shall-Issue conceal-carry movement that was taking place across the country. When I returned to work in the field, slinging guns across the glass in 1998, I was surprised to discover that Glock had widened its range to benefit from the increase in concealed carriers introducing the small, compact Glock 26. Its size is 9 millimeters.

But, I was still having doubts about 9 mm, so I purchased the Glock 26's counterpart in .357 SIG, and that is the Glock 33, and I just never got used to it.

Look, the smaller Glock 26 and 27 were the first Glock handguns that introduced the finger grooves that were molded into the grip's front strap and cut-off "thumb is rests" on the frame. This was done to earn enough "points" by an unorthodox rule enacted under the Gun Control Act of 1968. An explanation of the points system is located on the NRA's website. However, due to the diminution of points due to weight and size, the compact Glock 26 needed to gain the points back somehow. Moreover, "target grips" were worth five points.

The grooves on my fingers were not in the correct position for me and many others. For the bigger models of Glock, this was not as significant for a service-size gun; it can allow a bit of "slop" within the grip but still operate smoothly. However, a smaller gun? It can be used to punish poor grip.

I stopped using tiny Glocks till the Glock 43 was released, and I bought one of them. It was domestically produced and didn't need to meet the import points, so there were no finger grooves. Hooray! But the slender, popsicle-stick grasp of the gun with a single stack slammed the unsteady grips mercilessly.

In the Gen5 Glock 26.

If I had been asked to look over my experience with the Glock 26 Gen 5, my response was mild at most. The 26 was not my favorite Glock, even though I've seen the potential of 9mm as a defense cartridge.

After I laid to hold the review sample, I was instantly impressed by two things straight from the box.

Do you have good factory eyes on the inside of a Glock? This truly is an exciting and new world!

The Gen 5's standard Factory "Bold" sights from AmeriGlo can be described as far superior to most sights in a factory pistol currently. That's not a top-of-the-line semi-custom, at least for sights designed for carrying. Since the beginning of a decade, I've been taking the factory sights from my carry gun and putting them on the new pair of Trijicon HDs and AmeriGlo Pros, with their big contrast-colored front dots. It's now possible to get the exact look right from the box. Good work, Glock!

The trigger in the test sample Glock 26 is bar-none. It's the most comfortable manufacturer Glock trigger I've ever experienced. I'm sure Glock has often stated that its factory triggers weigh "5.5 grams," but in truth, they've always been closer to six or 6.5 pounds and have thus spawned the development of a lucrative aftermarket for changes to the trigger.

Due to the updated Gen 5 architecture, the trigger on this Glock 26 is an honest ~5.25 pounds as measured by the RCBS gauge of the trigger's pull. Furthermore, the weight remains relatively consistent throughout the trigger pull, in contrast to the older Glock trigger with very little resistance during the first takeup before hitting a wall. It's almost identical to the modified Glock triggers that use Glock's plastic, green "NY1" release spring and "minus" 3.5-pound connectors to give the same feel.

The test is in the shooting, but the two minor adjustments in the Glock 26 Gen 5's grip compared to my Gen 3 Glock 33 make an enormous difference on the planet. It has the latest, more coarse grip, which is an immense improvement over Gen 3. In addition, the irritating ridge between the finger grooves has gone.

Instead of a constant wedge that tries to pull my fingers, I can slide both my traffic digits and my ring finger up higher on the grip, which improves my control. Additionally, the standard-sized grip makes it much easier for me to shoot more quickly and precisely than it was with my Glock 43. With 22 ounces of empty weight, it's only three and a half pounds heavier than the single-stack micro-Glock. However, with more than half the ammunition capacity, that gap will increase by about one ounce or so once loaded, based on the ammunition you're using to start it.
