G17 Gen5 review

Overview

Glock is a brand that produces the most sought-after handguns available and with the right reasons. Handguns that are easy sturdy, reliable, and durable are a magnet for interest within the market - which is odd isn't it? Once you've honed in an idea that is effective and performs well it is common for people to dismiss "updates" and changes as marketing strategies. The most recent Glock 17 (Gen-5) is an excellent handgun, and is regarded as a top choice by a lot of people in the LE and military world. Let's have a closer examination of the pistol through the following Glock 17 Gen-5 review.

G17 Gen5

Initial Impressions Gen-5 Glock 17

I think it's right to be honest and admit that I own a handful of Glocks (including Gen-4 Glock 17). Gen-4 Glock 17.) This means that I'm likely to be somewhat biased about my impression. In that regard I don't like everything about Glock and probably never will. My personal view is that it's essential to consider more than just the loyalty of a brand, particularly when firearms are involved.

It's not a secret that the Glock 17 holds a respected place in the gun community. With numerous government and private operational usage and a wide range of operational use, the G17 has become the standard for full-sized handguns. They are Austrian made polymer frame 9mm handguns that have roots dating to the 1980's are increasingly being used. No matter if you're a big lover or not of Glock and not its Glock name is a fact.

G17 Gen5 Dimensions

Gen 4 Vs. Gen 5

Glock introduced their Gen-5 collection in 2017, and was their most recent generation (as at the time we wrote the article.) Each generation brings changes. The changes you see in Gen-5 G17 Gen-5 G17 are relatively minor and others are more significant. An upgraded barrel, the absence of grooves for fingers along with a flared and beveled magazine well, as well as upgraded sights are on the Gen-5 models.

With its full-size frame as well as a barrel that is long it is the Glock 17 really handles well for the majority of shooters. If you're used shooting single-stack, compact firearms The G17 is an old-fashioned firearm. But you'll get the concept.

Range Time Gen-5 G17

When I first received this Gen-5 Glock 17 for this review, I was at home with it . it's not a huge difference than that Gen-4 Glock 17 I own myself. The modifications aren't too significant and the overall feel to the hand is essentially identical, with the exception of the fact that it doesn't have finger grooves.

Similar to every other Glock frame, the frame is rectangular and the design are slender. The design and ergonomics in Glocks are something which people seem to enjoy or hate.

I immediately noticed the flared magazine because it's an option in this model, the Gen-4 G17. Many find this to be a an attractive feature that is directly related to speedier and smoother magazine change.

What I experienced with my Gen-5 Glock 17 at the range was mostly positive , and was not a complete surprise. In my review I shot more than a hundred rounds of various types of ammunition throughout the G17. The ammunition ran smoothly - even that of Federal Premium 147 Gr. HST ammo I tested.

For accuracy, I was fairly certain about the G17 even after 25 yards. The newly designed trigger was something that I observed and appreciated when firing. It's something I'll explore in the near future however, the improvement was to be substantial.

From a point of view of concealment I haven't seen many people who would attempt to carry the G17 concealed. If you're a larger individual and have a larger frame, it will be a bit difficult to conceal properly without excessive layers. However I think the frame would be great to wear on the waistband wear under the jacket. Do you want to have a Glock and require a smaller size? Check out Glock 19 or the Glock 19 or the Glock 43.

Trigger & Sights: Glock 17 Gen-5

One of the biggest complaints I have heard about Glock handguns is related with the trigger. A majority of people do not seem to be awed by the standard Glock trigger, including me. Though stock triggers aren't too bad according to me, the aftermarket triggers are generally an attractive feature with Glocks.

The enhancements to Gen-5 G17 trigger assembly. Gen-5 G17 the trigger impressed me. An easy pull and a regular break seemed to aid in shooting when I was increasing my shooting distance. The typical safety for blades is integrated in the trigger. Shooters must press the blade to fire the gun. I saw an immediate reset and let me quickly return to the "wall" to repeat shots.

Glock 17 Gen 5 Trigger Weight

My tests on the Gen-5 G17 used in this review revealed an average draw load of 5.4 pounds, which is right in line with the weight advertised for pulls.

Sight Image

I was lucky enough to not have the standard Glock polymer sights in this review. We've all heard it before that polymer sights from the factory tend to be sloppy and are difficult for shooting with. The model I tested included Ameriglo night sightings. While not my favorite sights, they were effective for me.

A front sight that is colored together with a blacked out rear is generally an iron sight design that works for me. I noticed that I needed to aim a bit low , but did not have any issues with the sights I was provided.

Functionality User Experience

Of all the handguns available, Glock is especially known for its minimalist and efficient designs. Gen-5 Glock 17 Gen-5 Glock 17 provided a relatively simple and pleasant shooting experience. I truly like shooting Glock handguns and don't have any concerns with the style. However, that doesn't mean I don't have some things I'd like to have different things about them.

One of the most unique characteristics of Gen-5 G17 was its uniqueness. Gen-5 G17 was the built-in slide release with ambidextrous. I found it a bit odd considering it was right underneath my index finger on the frame since I am shooter who shoots right handed. Reversible magazine releases are present on Gen-5 frames. This further demonstrates the broadness that Glock is striving for with the Gen-5 frame.

Although Gen-5's Gen-5 G17 frame as well as slide gave a good amount of grip and texture I was contemplating how wonderful it would be to have serrations on the slide's front. I applaud Glock by listening to feedback and introducing the grooves for fingers here. The "one fit all" approach is not the most ideal in regards to grip design.

As I stated in the past that the Glock 17 has that classic gun feel to many, with a smooth and easy recoil control. My ability to find the sights to follow up shots is incredibly effective with Glock 17. Glock 17. The reason for this is to the fact that I've trained using Glocks or not is up to discussion.

Muzzle Velocity

I performed the speed of the muzzle test for this review. I used Federal Premium HST147 gr. ammunition, which is a popular self-defense round. In the test I employed an Labradar device and fired five rounds in the group I tested. I'll begin by stating that Federal states that it has a muzzle velocity that is 1,000 feet in a second, which is the speed of four inches of barrel.

My test revealed the average muzzle speed of 1,004 feet per second , exactly in line with the the specifications of ammunition that are advertised.

  • Highest Velocity: 1,014 feet per second
  • Lowest Velocity: 994 feet per second
  • Extreme Spread 20
  • Standard Deviation 8.3

Final Thoughts

It's hard to find a fault when it comes to the Glock line from a personal viewpoint. Gen-5 Glock 17 Gen-5 Glock 17 offers undeniable quality for the money and will surely perform whenever you need it the most. Glocks might not appear the most elegant or come with many bells or whistles but they are able to function in almost every situation and use almost every type of ammunition.

Accessories and parts from the aftermarket are easily found for Glock pistols because of their popularity of the brand in the marketplace. Finding the right holsters, lights and holsters to are compatible will not be a problem with the modern world of business.

Many law enforcement officers and military personnel depend on thousands of military and law enforcement personnel trust the Glock 17 with their life on a regular basis and a significant majority do so because of their decision. The reputation for duty-level quality and performance is evident If you want to ask me. If you're in the market for a fully-sized handgun The Glock 17 Gen-5 is a definitely a worthy option. You'll have to look around for the gun in inventory.
