OVERVIEW
5-MeO-DMT is a research chemical psychedelic of the tryptamine class, four to six times more powerful than its better-known cousin, DMT (N, N-dimethyltryptamine). It is found in many trees and shrubs, including DMT and bufotenine (5–HO-DMT) and one toad species. You can also synthesize 5-MeO–DMT.

5-MeO-DMT |
Central and South America's 5-MeO–DMT is most commonly sourced from Anadenanthera pegrerana (yopo, cohoba) and Virola Theodora, traditionally harvested for psychoactive snuff.
It is also found in the milky-white venom of Sonoran Desert Toads (Bufo/Incilius alvarius, aka the Colorado River Toads), which are native to the southwestern United States as northwestern Mexico. The population of this ecologically fragile species has been under pressure from venom harvesting. It is currently listed as either endangered or local instinct in several US states. It is highly recommended to seek out alternative sources of 5-MeO DMT, such as synthetic or plant-derived.
5-MeO–DMT, used in ceremonial ceremonies among Amazonians, has great potential for treating certain medical conditions. A single inhalation of 5-MeO-DMT has been shown to significantly improve mental health and well-being and reduce symptoms of certain psychological disorders.
Although research on 5-MeO/DMT is still limited, a few studies support the anecdotal evidence. For example, a preliminary study showed that 42 participants who had taken 5-MeO–DMT reported higher levels of happiness and mindfulness and lower levels of anxiety and depression. After four weeks, a second assessment was done to confirm the effects.
These results are consistent with a 362-person survey that took 5-MeO–DMT. The psychedelic was reported by 80% of the respondents to have experienced an improvement in their anxiety and depression.
The popularity of 5-MeO-DMT is on the rise as more and more people are discovering that it can be a healing agent. Unfortunately, this has led to some undesirable practices among guides and other practitioners, such as overharvesting and the ecological strain of Sonoran Desert Toad, sexual abuse, and even unintended deaths, in several documented cases.
EXPERIENCE
5-MeO/DMT is one of the most powerful psychedelics that you can take. It can make your experience intense and powerful positively and negatively. Although everyone will experience a different experience, there are some things you can expect.
What to Expect
The most popular route of administration is to vape or smoke 5-MeO–DMT powder. The effects usually begin within 30 seconds of consumption. The peak is between 1 and 15 minutes after intake, lasting up to half an hour. The threshold dose for synthetic 5-MeO–DMT is 1-2 mg. A moderate-to-strong dose is between 5-10 mg. The threshold dose for naturally-derived 5-MeO-DMT is between 5-10 mg and 20-40 mg.
Doses that are swallowed are more potent, but they can also be unpredictable. Sublingual administration (under the tongue) and injection are also less common.
The effects of 5-MeO–DMT are strong and often cause a loss in coordination and control. Bright colors, moving environments or recursive patterns are some of the effects that 5-MeO-DMT can cause. Higher doses may even result in "environmental orbism." Visual effects are, however, limited. 5-MeO is not known for its visionary properties, unlike DMT. The experience is often described as a "perspective-shifting" that can produce physical, emotional, and conceptual effects.
The 5-MeO -DMT experience has one of its most prominent features: enhancing tactile awareness. This can lead to sensory overload. You may feel heavier. Extreme fear, extreme fear, and euphoria are all common emotions. Anxiety or excitement can often be felt at the beginning. A familiar feeling is an overwhelming sense of oneness with the universe. This can be accompanied by a feeling of being beyond time and space and experiencing the totality of all things. The 5-MeO–DMT experience can also lead to ego death. Other effects include auditory hallucinations, time distortion, nausea, memory loss, and memory loss.

Pharmacology
Like other tryptamines, 5-MeO is similar in structure to DMT but has a methoxy-group in the R5 position. It acts primarily as a serotonin (5HT) receptor agonist with a special binding affinity to the 5-HT1A subtype. It can also bind to trace amine receptors and 5-HT2A, potentially mediating hallucinogenic effects through the former. The function of 5-MeO–DMT is also believed to involve the inhibition of neurotransmitters like dopamine and noradrenaline.
Toxicity
Some evidence suggests that indole alkylamines (including 5-MeO–DMT) can cause serotonin disorder when overdosed or combined. Interactions with monoamine-oxidase inhibitors, such as harmaline and harmine, are particularly concerned. These drugs are often combined with increasing their effectiveness, but they can also dangerously increase your exposure to 5-MeO–DMT and its active metabolite bufotenine.
Animal studies have also highlighted safety concerns. 5-MeO–DMT in rats was shown to cause hypothermia (0.5-1 mg/kg) and hyperthermia (3-5-10 mg/kg). The 5-MeO–DMT-containing Phalaris Tuberose/Aquatica (bulbous Canary-grass) caused the respiratory failure and fatal tachycardia in sheep. This severe reaction is more likely to be caused by other toxins in plants, but it highlights the need to be cautious when approaching natural 5-MeO–DMT sources.
Dosing
The 5-MeO/DMT dosages will vary depending on whether the substance has been synthesized or naturally derived.

BENEFITS & RISKS
Potential Benefits
For thousands of years, south American shamans have used 5-MeO–DMT as a healing agent. This is partly due to its ability to induce mystical-type experiences. Although research on the drug is limited, recent studies support these ancient claims.
A survey of 362 adults revealed that 80% reported a decrease in anxiety and depression following 5-MeO–DMT. There was also an increase in life satisfaction and well-being. The intensity of the mystical experiences felt during the experience was the key to these improvements. Respondents who experienced intense mystical experiences reported higher spiritual significance and personal meaning rates.
In addition to being long-lasting, 5-MeO/DMT's benefits are lasting. A preliminary study found that 42 participants who took 5-MeO/DMT experienced a higher level of happiness and mindfulness and lower levels of anxiety and depression. After the initial experience, four weeks later, a follow-up assessment was done. The effects lasted.
5-MeO -DMT has a unique feature: it lasts for a shorter time than other psychedelics like LSD or psilocybin. Research has shown that psychedelic-assisted therapy can be helpful for people with many psychological disorders. However, sessions last 7 to 8 hours. 5-MeO–DMT is a short-acting, 30-90 minute-long psychotherapy that can be used as an adjunct to therapy sessions. Therapy sessions are usually 60-90 minutes long.
Risk Using MeO DMT
The Journal of Psychopharmacology recently found that 5-MeO -DMT is safe and poses low health risks.
However, before you dive into an experience, there are some things that you should be aware of. 5-MeO–DMT should not mix with MAOIs or antidepressants. Combining them can cause severe hypertension (elevated blood pressure and heart rate and temperature), seizures, and long-term kidney damage.
A sitter is recommended due to the unpredictable nature of 5-MeO–DMT. You should be aware of short-term unconsciousness, respiratory depression, delusional interactions with the environment, and respiratory depression. It should be taken in a comfortable sitting or lying position to prevent falling.
It is best to start with a low dose for those who are new to 5-MeO–DMT. This should be weighed on a scale of 0.002g (2 mg). People react differently to doses of 5-MeO-DMT (and it is not clear why), so caution is recommended, even if you have previous experience with tryptamines.
To minimize any negative experience with psychedelics, you should follow the 6Ss of psychedelic usage.

THERAPEUTIC USE
Although clinic research on 5-MeO–DMT's therapeutic uses is limited, it has been proven to be a helpful psychedelic in treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addiction. Sometimes, it's used with Ibogaine to help patients integrate their experiences.
However, 5-MeO–DMT research has increased in recent years. For example, researchers gave 5-MeO–DMT to mice in one study. They found a significant downregulation of mGluR5, a receptor that plays a role in drug abuse's reward mechanism. Mice without the mGluR5 genes are less likely to self-administer cocaine or ethanol and have fewer nicotine withdrawal symptoms. In addition, 5-MeO–DMT treatment led to an increase in integrin levels in cells. Similar responses are seen in antidepressant medications, suggesting that 5-MeO–DMT may have antidepressant properties.
Two recent surveys of more than 400 people revealed that most reported a decrease in anxiety and depression following 5-MeO–DMT. They also reported a greater sense of well-being and increased life satisfaction. In addition, some people found that the experience helped them overcome PTSD and addiction.
The John Hopkins Center for Psychedelic Research has begun to investigate the effects of 5-MeO–DMT. Alan Davis, a researcher at the Center for Psychedelic Research, believes the drug may effectively treat mental illness. This is due to neurological changes in the brains of users caused by the substance and insights gained from the psychedelic experience.
Mexico's Crossroads Ibogaine Treatment Center Clinical Research Director Dr. Joseph Barsuglia is currently researching 5-MeO–DMT as an alternative treatment for addiction. He believes that 5-MeO/DMT, in conjunction with psychedelic Ibogaine, could be a powerful combination to eradicate substance abuse issues. He said that people talk about "melting into God," being one with God, and being able to release long-standing trauma and pain. "We find that [5-MeO–DMT and ibogaine] works like... 1+1=5. It's exponential.
In addition, 5-MeO -DMT seems to have a similar placebo analgesic effect to hypnosis. Therefore, it may also be used to treat acute and chronic inflammatory conditions, including some types of cancer.
More indirectly, 5-MeO-DMT is also helping researchers better understand the neurobiological basis of schizophrenic hallucinations--ultimately paving the way for more effective antipsychotic drugs.

PERSONAL GROWTH
Although 5-MeO–DMT has promise as a therapeutic drug, it is also used for spiritual and personal growth for hundreds of years. According to Davis and Barsuglia, most 5-MeO–DMT users used it for spiritual exploration. However, they also reported intense mystical-type experiences, including ego death.
Even though it was frightening, this experience is often described as optimistic. It is often described as a cycle of death and rebirth that leads to lasting self-improvements such as mental clarity, greater motivation, joy in life, and inner peace. In addition, many people have experienced enlightenment, which is characterized by an inseparability with the universe or the feeling of being "all that is.". These experiences often come in waves or reactivations over days or weeks.
Many people are drawn to 5-MeO - DMT because they have to let go of their ego. People can gain a deeper understanding of mortality and accept it. In addition, it can help with past traumas, negative thoughts, and negative behavior patterns.
A group of 5-MeO/DMT practitioners also stated many specific integration and grounding methods to increase growth potential. These include massage, acupuncture, certain foods, and talking with others. Interestingly, they advise against meditation because it could prolong the grounding/integration period by triggering additional reactivations.
You can listen to our podcast interview with Natasja Pegrom to learn more about this topic. We talk about Integration and Connecting with the Divine.
LEGALITY
USA 5-MeO/DMT
The US Schedule I controlled substance 5-MeO–DMT makes it illegal to produce, distribute, possess, or buy. However, 5-MeO–DMT-containing plants are not generally controlled, especially in Oakland, CA. All "entheogenic" plants were decriminalized by 2019. Adults aged 21 and over can now use them medicinally, under the resolution's intended purpose, or for any other purpose without fear of being charged. It specifically decriminalizes or rather deprioritizes their cultivation and distribution for law enforcement.
Canada 5-MeO/DMT
Some people prefer to purchase 5-MeO–DMT in Canada because it is not under control. It should be noted that 5-MeO/DMT suppliers in Canada can't legally ship the drug to countries where it is still illegal.
The legality of 5-MeO/DMT in Mexico
Mexico has a similar legal status to Canada for 5-MeO/DMT. It is more common south of the border, however. As a result, 5-MeO/DMT retreats in Mexico are pretty common.
It is crucial to vet facilitators before deciding to join a group carefully. Our Psychedelic Directory has more information about choosing a 5-MeO DMT Retreat.
The legality of 5-MeO/DMT elsewhere
5-MeO–DMT is prohibited in many European countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and New Zealand. It is allowed to be used in research in Denmark.
CONSIDERATIONS ETHICAL
5-MeO DMT & the Sustainability of the Sonoran Desert Toad
Although there are many natural and synthetic sources for 5-MeO–DMT, "toad medicine," a form of traditional Mexican medicine, has seen a rise in popularity. As a result, the Sonoran Desert Toad population (Bufo Alvarius), whose habitat is small and covers southeastern California to southern Arizona, New Mexico, northwestern Mexico, and southern New Mexico, has been affected.
The United States is currently working to include the Sonoran Desert Toad on the endangered species list. It is not yet protected at the federal level. However, it has been declared endangered in New Mexico and possibly extinct in Southern California.
Although the International Union for Conservation of Nature does not consider the toad an endangered species (IUCN), the classification was established in 2004. Unfortunately, it didn't reflect recent interest in the toad's psychedelic and therapeutic potential. This is causing the toad's population to be endangered and making it vulnerable to black-market trafficking, inhumane breeding practices, and "milking" in captivity.
It is possible to avoid the destruction of the toad population by using synthetic 5-MeO–DMT in place of vapor from the animal. Although many people believe that toad medicine has superior quality because it is "pure," there is no evidence to support the claim that 5-MeO derived from toads provides a better/different experience than synthetic 5-MeO DMT
Cultural Ethics
Cultural considerations should also be considered. Eight indigenous cultures from the Sonoran Desert started to promote the use of the substance to regain their cultural identity. However, it is unclear if toad medicine was used in these cultural practices before Ken Nelson discovered its psychoactive effects.
In both cases, 5-MeO–DMT has been incorporated into indigenous cultures in the US. This has led to the reclamation and reintroduction of ancestral medicine in Mexico.
These groups have used peyote and mushrooms in their ceremonies for centuries. The Bufo alvariustoad has now joined (or rejoined) the list.
This raises the issue of cultural appropriation. Toad medicine is now being used in contexts and locations quite different from its native culture.
Local, small-scale use of 5-MeO DMT from toads in indigenous practices is more sustainable and ethical than large-scale, global usage, especially considering that many people don't have any other options. It's hard to justify harvesting the toad-derived compound on a large scale unless you consider local uses, which are where synthetic and plant-based alternatives are more readily available.
Guides are subject to ethics violations.
In Mexico and South America, retreats offering 5-MeO–psychonauts, neohealers, and therapists set up DMT informal settings.
This has created friction with indigenous practitioners, but it also opened up a market for charlatans who profit from people under 5-MeO/DMT and are not in control. Two such practitioners--Gerardo Sandoval and Octavio Rettig--have been accused of sexual abuse, psychological manipulation, intentional overdosing, physical violence, hospitalizations, and at least four deaths in Rettig's case.
This shows the importance of carefully vetting facilitators and being careful about who you choose to sit next to. We recommend that you visit our psychedelic directory to learn more about how to choose a 5-MeO DMT Retreat.

HISTORY & STATS
The Americas have been using 5-MeO–DMT for hundreds, if not thousands of years. According to evidence in northern Chile, the practice dates back to at least the 8th Century when traces of 5-MeO-DMT were present in ancient snuffing paraphernalia. Friar Ramon Pane first documented the use of 5-MeO–DMT-containing snuff in 1496. Pane, reporting to Christopher Columbus about the Taino people in Hispaniola, observed cohoba smoke inhaled through reeds. It was used to purge sick people and get medical diagnoses from spirits.
Joseph Gumilla, a 1737 Otomac from southern Venezuela, observed a similar practice with yuba (or youpo). Alexander von Humboldt later described the process of making snuff. The seeds of Acacia niopo (Adenanthera pegrerana) were first left to dry, then mashed with cassava flour, lime from snail shells, and finally, the paste was made. The mixture was then dried on a fire, pulverized, and inhaled through a Y-shaped tube made of bone, such as a plover's leg. The forked ends cross the septum. Richard Spruce, in the mid-1800s, also described the use of tubes to allow two people to blow the snuff into each other's nostrils. Spruce also collected Adenanthera Peregrina specimens for identification.
The chemists Toshio Hiro and Kenya Shimodaira synthesized 5-MeO–DMT in 1936. However, it wasn't until 1959 that it was identified as the main psychoactive component in yopo/cohoba. It was also found as venom in the Colorado River Toad (Bufo/Incilius Alvarius, or Sonoran Desert Toad) at concentrations up to 15%.
5-MeO–DMT was legal to order in the US and other countries in the 1970s via mail order through the Church of the Tree of Life or the Church of the Toad of Light. Because scales that accurately measure milligrams were not widely available, 5-MeO-DMT was often added to cannabis or parsley to aid dosing.
Over the decades, recreational use has steadily increased while remaining underground. Jonathan Ott, an ethnobotanist, and others developed 5-MeO–DMT to sell online in the 1990s. Mark Niemoller, a researcher chemical vendor, was arrested in 2001 under the Controlled Substances Analogue Act of 1996. He was placed under house arrest after he agreed to stop selling 5-MeO–DMT and other substances. Operation Web Tryp saw five additional 5-MeO–DMT vendors and research chemical vendors being shut down by the DEA in July 2004. This prompted many others to cease trading voluntarily. 5-MeO–DMT was made a Schedule I drugged by the United States in January 2011.
Current use
In major drug surveys, 5-MeO–DMT is often mixed with other tryptamines and "novel psychoactive drugs," making it difficult to determine its prevalence. However, Google search statistics can give you a good idea of its popularity over time. The number of searches for 5-MeO–DMT dropped dramatically between 2004 and 2007, the year of "Operation Web Tryp." They have remained steady at this low level since then.
MYTHS
"5-MeO - DMT is a form."
This myth is based upon a dangerous and common misconception of pharmacology. It is not a form of DMT like psilocybin. Despite being chemically similar, the effects of 5-MeO–DMT and DMT are vastly different. For example, 5-MeO–DMT has a lower toxicity threshold than DMT. Therefore, combining the two substances could prove dangerous.
"Licking toads" is a great way to get high.
Alexander Shulgin attributes this myth, or rather, very bad idea, to sensationalism in media. The Colorado River Toad is not a popular method of obtaining 5-MeO–DMT. This is simply because it can be fatal. Raw toad secretions contain other chemicals that are cardiotoxic. This means that they can disrupt the function of the heart. Many people have died from licking toads. One child with seizure symptoms was admitted to a hospital for a week. Because this is the only known psychoactive species, it's possible to lick the wrong toad, which could cause paralysis or death.
FAQ
Where can I find legal 5-MeO/DMT retreats or experiences?
Third Wave's psychedelic provider directory allows you to search for legal, curated 5-MeO/DMT retreats. The Third Wave team has rigorously vetted all retreats, so you can be confident that they are worth your consideration in this transformative and vulnerable experience.
Is it possible to detect it on a drug screen?
5-MeO–DMT is not detected in standard or extended drug testing. There are also no specialized tests that can detect it. It is also not like other drugs and shouldn't cause false positives.
Where can I purchase 5-MeO+DMT online?
Vendors in Canada, Mexico, and other countries that don't control 5-MeO are likely to have it for sale. It is illegal to purchase 5-MeO-DMT online, even if you do not reside in these countries.
Do you allow me to test the 5-MeO-DMT and see if it is safe?
Even if you are confident in your supplier, it is a good idea to test your 5-MeO/DMT. Reagent test kits from Bunk Police can identify hundreds of adulterants and substitutes--offering peace of mind and potentially saving your life.
For example, the Hofmann and Mecke Reagents can be used to identify genuine 5-MeO–DMT. Just add a small amount of 5-MeO–DMT to a sterilized test tube or onto a white ceramic surface. Next, compare the spectrum booklet to determine if there is any color change.
Is 5-MeO/DMT able to cause psychological trauma?
The 5-MeO-5-DMT experience is overwhelming for most people. The consensus reality is that the body, physical environment, and self can all fall apart and that behavior can become unpredictable. Although long-term psychosis may seem unlikely, it could take time to recover fully from 5-MeO–DMT.
Some users report persistent psychological problems after taking higher doses. These include paranoia, subtle but manageable resurfacing effects, and persistent psychological difficulties that can last several weeks.
"White-outs" or memory suppression can also occur during the 5-MeO DMT trip. This negatively affects users' ability to form memories of altered states.
Are there any risks?
5-MeO/DMT is relatively safe when taken in the presence of a sitter who has no contraindicated or other drugs (like MAOI antidepressants). However, persistent anxiety, sleep disruption, and panic attacks have been reported following just one dose. Therefore, it's best to use low doses and have an experienced sitter to help reduce the risk.
You may prefer to be accompanied by a facilitator or 'practitioner,' a 5-MeO/DMT specialist who can guide you and help you integrate your experiences. Here are some tips to help you choose the right person/group for the job and what you can expect them to do.
What should I do if I take too much 5-MeO-DMT?
Reports of 5-MeO/DMT overdose indicate that there is a possibility of losing consciousness and breathing difficulties. In this event, you can roll the victim onto your side and call emergency services. Keep them calm until paramedics arrive. After ensuring that the airway is open, a trained and responsible sitter might be able to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
Is it legal for natural 5-MeO -DMT sources to be grown (5-MeO -DMT plants, 5-MeO -DMT toad species, etc.)?
Cultivating plant sources of Schedule I drugs is a bit of a legal grey area (except in specified cases like cannabis and peyote, where entheogenic/psychedelic plants are specifically decriminalized). Although the law bans the cultivation of any material containing illegal substances in any quantity, there is little chance of being prosecuted. However, 5-MeO–DMT extraction from any source can be considered illegal and could lead to criminal prosecution.
The rules for toads are more clear. Only New Mexico residents can collect toads without a license. Non-residents and residents of Arizona both need a fishing license to collect up to 10 Colorado River Toads. California law makes it a misdemeanor for anyone to collect toads. Possession is also against the law. The Colorado River Toad, regardless of its legality, is a threatened species. It is known that keeping toads captive, as well as regular "milking," can cause damage to their health.
Which is the best way to do it?
Although there are many safe ways to use 5-MeO–DMT powder, vaporizing it or smoking it is the best and most reliable. Insufflated and sublingual use have a shorter onset time. However, some people feel chest pains due to inhaling the smoke. Some people prefer intramuscular or intravenous injections, while others experience no side effects. Even at low doses, these drugs can cause intense and rapid effects. Due to safety concerns, it is not recommended that you swallow the drug. It can also be ineffective.
Can I microdose 5-MeODMT?
It's difficult to determine a microdose range because everyone's reactions can differ. For example, some people experience profound effects with a low threshold dose, while others feel mild to moderate effects.
Can I develop a tolerance?
Yes. Tolerance develops quickly, and it takes approximately two hours to return to baseline. Cross-tolerance is not possible with other psychedelics.
Do I need to mix it with other drugs, or can I use it alone?
Mixing it with MAOIs and RIMAs and some antidepressants can lead to serotonin syndrome or death. Combining releasing agents and reuptake inhibitors for serotonin or dopamine can lead to serious side effects. Mixing 5-MeO/DMT with psychoactive drugs is not recommended. Due to the possibility of nausea and choking, it is not recommended that you mix 5-MeO-DMT with alcohol.
Is 5-MeO–DMT comparable to 5-MeO–MiPT or 5-MeO–DALT, 5-MeO–DPT, 5-MeO–DALT, or 5-MeO–DiPT?
Not necessarily. Although substances in the 5-MeO category may have some commonalities, their effects and safety can differ. Particularly, the dosage and legal status of substances in the 5-MeO group can vary greatly. Therefore, it's not wise to assume that they are interchangeable.
5-MeO-MPT
Orally, 5-MeO–MiPT (or Moxy) can be taken (e.g., As 5-MeO–MiPTHCl or as a cigarette (as free base). Threshold effects can be felt as low as 1-2 mg when taken orally or as high as 10-15 mg 5-MeO–MiPT if you smoke. The experience can last up to 5-8 hours, and 15+ mg is considered heavy or intense. Some people use 5-MeO–MiPT for sex. 5-MeO–MiPT can be purchased online in the USA. However, it is not clear what its legal status is.
5-MeO-DiPT
Foxy, or Foxy methoxy, 5-MeO -DiPT is an entactogenic and sexual drug similar to 5-MeO -MPT. It is usually taken orally in the form of 5-MeO–DiPTHCl (3-15+mg) and can last up to 8 hours. 5-MeO–DiPT in Canada is legal, even though it's a Schedule I substance.
5-MeO-DALT
5-MeO–DALT can be taken orally in 5-MeO–DALT HCl at 4-30+mg. It is also believed to help with cluster headaches. Given its unscheduled nature, 5-MeO–DALT might be available for sale in the USA. It could be an analog of 5-MeO–DiPT.
5-MeO-aMT
Alpha has a threshold dose of 0.5 mg, and 5-MeO–aMT (or Alpha) may have a threshold dose as high as 6-15 mg. The effects are expected to last between 8 and 12 hours. 5-MeO–aMT has been linked to overdose-related hospitalizations and deaths in Erowid (5-50 mg). It is reportedly not scheduled in the USA, except Florida.
